    Kavvayi is a remote island group located near Payyannur, in the Kannur district of Kerala. It is one of the offbeat tourist destinations in Kerala. Kavvayi, also known as Kavil Pattanam, makes you fall in love with the gorgeous backwater stretches fed by the rivers Kavvayi, Vannathichal, Kankol, Kuppithodu, and Kuniyan. Like many other wonderful backwater destinations, Kavvayi has its charms that can literally make you fall in love with the place.

    Kavvayi backwaters are stretched across the districts of Kannur and Kasaragod. This unsung serene land of composed beauty is the third-largest backwater in Kerala and the largest backwater island group in the northern region of Kerala. Kavvayi refers to a series of smaller islands connected by a bridge to Payyannur. It has been blessed with many physical attributes and is regarded as one of the most exotic locations in North Kerala.

    The biggest island of Kavvayi is Valiyaparamba, and the backwater nearby is also recognized by the same title. An isolated beach called Valiparamba Beach passes parallel to the backwaters on its west side.

    It used to be the hub for the business of spices and gems from Malabar and wootz steel / Damascus steal until it was forbidden by the British in the 17th century. The island is also renowned for the Zamindar system that used to exist here. Kavvayi was the headquarters for a large area that housed a huge harbor and a court of law, along with the British East India Company. It declined after the headquarters had been relocated to other parts of Malabar.

    Agriculture and fishing are the main sources of income for the villagers of Kavvayi.  Kavvayi can be established into a match fishing and trophy fishing destination at an international level. There is also a tremendous potential for backwater tourism, aqua-tourism, and remote village tourism.

    These backwaters form the biggest wetland in northern Kerala with an area of approximately 37 sq kilometers. Boat trips give one with the opportunity to witness the simplistic villagers perform their daily tasks dutifully. One comes across rare biodiversity on a regular basis. Boat trips will also help you to discover each of the islands. You can also enjoy mouthwatering seafood in the region. Calicut International Airport is the closest airport to Kavvayi Backwaters, which is 154 kilometers away. If you want to enjoy a boat journey to explore the beauty of a picturesque spot, you can hire a boat ride from Kotti-Kottappuram.

    There is also a bus and jeep service to the town of Payyanur. The national highway goes through the junction of Perumba. Places like  Goa and Mumbai can be reached on the northern side, and Cochin and Thiruvananthapuram can be reached on the south side. The road east of Iritty links up to Mysore and Bangalore. Trains are obtainable to almost all parts of India subject to advance booking on the Internet.
